Our Calgary veterinary team spays and neuters dogs of all breeds and sizes.
Spaying Female Dogs
A spay is a surgery that removes a female dog’s ovaries and uterus.
Spaying your dog:
- Prevents unplanned litters
- Ends heat cycles, along with the bleeding and attention from male dogs that come with them
- Protects against pyometra, a potentially life-threatening infection of the uterus
- Lowers the risk of mammary tumours
Neutering Male Dogs
A neuter is a surgery that removes a male dog’s testicles.
Neutering your dog:
- Prevents unplanned litters
- Eliminates the risk of testicular cancer
- Lowers the risk of some prostate problems
- Can reduce roaming, marking and mounting, especially when done before these habits set in
When to Spay or Neuter a Dog
The right age depends on your dog’s size, breed and health:
- Small and medium breeds are often spayed or neutered around 6 months of age. For females, this is usually before the first heat.
- Large and giant breeds may benefit from waiting until they’ve finished growing, often between 9 and 18 months. Waiting may lower the risk of some joint problems and certain cancers in these breeds.
- Adult and senior dogs can still be spayed or neutered. We’ll check your dog’s health before surgery.
Our veterinarians will recommend the best time for your dog.

Spaying Female Cats
A spay is a surgery that removes a female cat’s ovaries and uterus.
Spaying your cat:
- Prevents unplanned litters
- Ends heat cycles, which in cats can repeat every few weeks and bring yowling, restlessness and attempts to get outside
- Protects against pyometra, a potentially life-threatening infection of the uterus
- Lowers the risk of mammary tumours, which are often cancerous in cats
Neutering Male Cats
A neuter is a surgery that removes a male cat’s testicles.
Neutering your cat:
- Prevents unplanned litters
- Can reduce urine spraying and the strong odour of an intact male’s urine
- Can reduce roaming and fighting, which lowers the risk of abscesses and infections from bite wounds
- Often makes him calmer and easier to live with indoors
When to Spay or Neuter a Cat
The right time depends on your cat’s age and health:
- Kittens are often spayed or neutered around 5 months of age. Cats can go into heat and get pregnant as early as 4 months, so early surgery helps prevent surprise litters.
- Adult and senior cats can still be spayed or neutered. We’ll check your cat’s health before surgery.
Our veterinarians will recommend the best time for your cat.
Call NowWhat to Expect Before, During and After Surgery
Before Surgery
Before your pet’s spay or neuter, they’ll need a pre-surgical exam with one of our veterinarians. We also recommend pre-anesthetic bloodwork, which checks that your pet’s organs can safely process anesthesia.
When you book, we’ll go over everything you need to do to prepare, including when to stop feeding your pet and what time to drop them off.
Surgery Day
On the day of surgery, you’ll drop off your pet when we open. A member of our team will check them in, confirm they haven’t eaten and answer any last questions you have.
When it’s time for surgery, your pet will be placed under general anesthesia. Our team will monitor them closely throughout the procedure, and we’ll give pain medication to keep them comfortable.
Once your pet is awake and recovering, we’ll call to let you know when they’re ready to go home later that day.
Recovery at Home
Most pets are a little sleepy the evening after surgery and back to their usual selves within a few days. We’ll send your pet home with pain medication and go over aftercare instructions with you at pickup.
For about 10 to 14 days while the incision heals:
- Keep your pet’s cone on to stop them licking the incision
- Limit running, jumping and rough play
- Keep the incision dry, so no baths or swimming
- Check the incision daily for redness, swelling or discharge
We use dissolvable stitches, so no follow-up visit is needed to remove them. If anything doesn’t look right during recovery, give us a call.

Dog and Cat Spay and Neuter FAQs
How much does spay or neuter surgery cost at your clinic?
Cost depends on your pet’s species, size and sex, and on whether pre-anesthetic bloodwork is added. Spays usually cost more than neuters, since the surgery is more involved. Call us for an estimate.
Is spay and neuter surgery safe?
Spays and neuters are routine surgeries, and serious complications are rare in healthy pets. Every pet has a pre-surgical exam, and our team monitors them closely under anesthesia.
Is my pet too old to be spayed or neutered?
Healthy adult and senior pets can be spayed or neutered, and our veterinarians check each pet’s health before surgery. For older females, a spay still protects against pyometra, which becomes more common with age. Pre-anesthetic bloodwork is especially important for senior pets.
Will spaying or neutering change my pet’s behaviour or weight?
It won’t change your pet’s personality, but it can reduce hormone-driven habits like roaming, marking and mounting. Some pets need fewer calories afterward, so you may need to adjust their food to prevent weight gain.
Will my pet need to stay overnight?
No. Pets go home the same day. You’ll drop them off when we open, and we’ll call you when they’re ready to be picked up.
Can a dog or cat be spayed while in heat or pregnant?
Often, yes, but the surgery can be more involved. For dogs in heat, we may recommend waiting two to three months after the heat ends. If your pet may be pregnant, let us know when you book and our veterinarians will go over your options.
Are you accepting new clients?
Yes. New clients are always welcome. Your pet will have a pre-surgical exam before their spay or neuter, so bring any medical records you have.
